Laying the Groundwork for a Successful Lobby Day on April 4th!
CWA Hits the Small Screen
Prince Hall Children’s Division Steward, Laura Keys, joined with other state workers on a recent filming of Labor Vision. Labor Vision is a weekly show that highlights worker’s issues across Missouri. (See page 6 for show times.) Laura discussed the importance of our COLA legislation, HB 641 and SB 392. After filming Laura remarked, “Labor vision helped us get our message out statewide. The more attention we can bring to the injustices we face as workers, the stronger we will be.”
Legislators Visit Jefferson County
Members from the Jefferson County area met with State Representatives Mike Frame, Belinda Harris, Ron Casey and Sam Komo at the Family Support Division office on Friday, January 19, 2007. Issues addressed included caseloads standards, the pay raise proposal, and continued turnover in the county. Area Representative Colette Nagel helped with the event and provided an overview of some of the problems within her office. The legislators also talked with workers about the need to grow our Union membership and asked them to get more involved. They explained why state workers needs to become a collective unit to make changes in Missouri. If you would like to schedule a legislative visit in your office, contact the Union office at (800)575-6355.
COPE Can Make A Difference
On February 21, 2007, Steward Margaret Freeman made the trip from Kansas City to Jefferson City for a Mini Lobby Day. Margaret spent the day meeting with Representatives Shalonn Curls and Michael Brown (pictured) and Senator Brad Lager to discuss state worker issues. After hearing Senator Lager’s adamant opposition to a COLA for state workers, Margaret decided she wanted to help elect more allies at the Capitol and joined COPE, CWA’s political action fund.
